Base ISTAR Training

Symbiotics’ history in the field of Base ISTAR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition and Reconnaissance) reaches back to 1998 when we were involved in the early training needs and course development for new surveillance systems procured under Urgent Operational Requirement arrangements.
In simple terms, Base ISTAR platforms are fitted with an array of cameras and sensors (radar, thermal imager, laser, magnetic, motion detectors, etc) which provide military commanders with situational awareness, target acquisition and tracking information on hostile and friendly forces. They deliver a 24-hour, day-and-night, and all-weather capability at Forward Operating Bases and Patrol Bases in Operational Theatres; providing force protection and perimeter surveillance.
Following the principles of the Defence Systems Approach to Training, Symbiotics continue to be heavily involved with the programme and manage and deliver training to operators and maintainers of ISTAR systems as they prepare to be deployed on Operations.
New Zealand ATTTO purchase ADAPT Pre-Screen

The Aviation, Tourism and Travel Training Organisation (ATTTO) is New Zealand’s industry training organisation (ITO) for the travel, tourism, aviation and museum sectors. Working with these industries, the government funded organisation develops sector relevant qualifications, delivers high quality training and promotes career development through NZSkillsConnect.
As part of their work to assist the aviation industry in improving pilot training outcomes, the ATTTO have selected ADAPT Pre-Screen to act as the engine behind this initiative. Incorporated as a two tier screening process, the tool will enable flight schools and applicants to assess a candidate’s success potential and employability as a pilot prior to a training commitment.
Cognisant of the expense required to qualify as a pilot in New Zealand, the programme has been designed to ensure that trainees have the best possible chance of being successful and completing the course. Identifying aptitude and trainability prior to enrolment (through this national standard) signifies the Minister’s intent to ensure the highest standards are met and confidence in government funded scholarship is upheld.
Deploying ADAPT Pre-Screen has the potential to reduce costs by screening out those who are less likely to succeed in training. The pre-screening tool is a reliable indicator of whether a student will be able to demonstrate confidence and effective learning strategies during the early stages of flight training. It is NOT a pass or fail test but enables training providers and airlines to make a select/not select decision based on whether the prospective student has the right cognitive, physical and multi-tasking skills required of pilots.
With low operational costs, en-masse assessment and validated results; the tool delivers a reliable, repeatable, and immediate solution to meet the needs of the ATTTO.

ADAPT selects pilots for new Cameroonian airline
Symbiotics was approached by CAE in 2010 on behalf of Camair Co; an emerging airline in Cameroon looking to select the most suitable First Officers and Captains to take their flagship carrier into live operation by early 2011. The national airline aimed to select its new employees by adhering to internationally recognised standards across the company infrastructure and in particular with regard to pilot selection.
The goal was to ensure that candidates were not only reliable, safe operators that would pass the 737 and 767 type rating course but, equally importantly, that they would fit the new company ethos and culture.
Symbiotics worked closely with Camair Co to identify the organisational culture and, in doing so, defined the requisite personality match. In line with this, Symbiotics completed a course analysis of the Boeing type rating syllabus and an analysis of the Knowledge Skills and Attitudes required for the role of First Officer and Captain.
After identifying the client specific requirements, the ADAPT Team embarked upon a selection period in Douala, Cameroon. After assessing a range of candidates with a wealth of experience, skills and different degrees of ‘organisational fit’, ADAPT provided Camair Co with all the information required, including details of candidate trainability, to intelligently identify the best candidates to move the company forward in their bid to becoming the national flag carrier of Cameroon.
